Explanation of piston specs listed below:

  • Bore = Finished cylinder bore size that piston is designed to work in
  • Stroke = Crankshaft stroke that piston is designed to work with
  • Rod = Connecting rod length that piston is made to work with
  • CH = Compression Height, also known as compression distance. This is the dimension, in inches, from the centerline of the pin bore to the top deck of the piston
  • Wt = weight in grams of one piston
  • Pin = pin diameter
  • CCs = cc displacement in total of the dish and valve reliefs
  • CR = static compression ratio based on a 34.6 cc cylinder head chamber volume and .030 inch thick head gasket
  • Piston Ring Set = part number for a set of replacement piston rings. The rings listed here are for use with the Wiseco pistons listed beside them.

Important Note About using Suzuki Vitara Pistons in D16Z6 Engines built for High Performance

A somewhat popular piston swap these days is to use Suzuki Vitara pistons in high performance D16Z6 engines. This is often done in an effort to get a low cost piston to use for turbo charged D16Z6 engines. There are sellers on Ebay who even tout this is a great idea and their ads show pistons for sale for this application in the $100 to $150 range. This is a case where "buyer beware" is very important. The majority of the Vitara pistons being sold are stock replacement, cast or  hypereutectic pistons. The ads tout these is high performance pistons and avoid mentioning that they are in fact, stock replacement pistons, not performance pistons!

The only reason these pistons work in some D16Z6 turbo applications is because of the very low compression they provide in the D16Z6 engine, and small amounts of boost. You are giving up torque and power right away, as the compression is much lower than it needs to be, a full point or more in many cases. Any serious performance engine, and especially turbo engines, make more torque and power, and are much stronger, when built with forged pistons. A cast or hypereutectic piston will crack when its design strength is exceeded. A forged piston is far stronger than a cast or hypereutectic piston. In fact, hypereutectic pistons are still cast pistons, but they use a higher percentage of silicon in the base material, which makes them stronger than a standard cast piston. A hypereutectic piston is no where near as strong as a forged piston.

Beware of ads suggesting you use cheap cast or hyper Vitara pistons in your high output D16Z6 engine. If you break a piston, the cost to repair your engine will be much greater than what you save by not buying a top quality forged piston in the first place. Even if you choose to buy from a dealer other than us, please, buy D16Z6 forged pistons for your high performance or racing D16Z6 engine, your wallet will thank you down the road.
