The Chrysler 383 V8 engine was in production from 1959 through 1971. While most people are familiar with the B engine 383 which used a 4.250 bore size and a 3.375 stroke crank, there was also a few RB based 383 engines built in 1959 and 1960. The RB 383 used a small 4.031 inch bore and 3.750 inch stroke. The 1959 and 1960 RB 383 is seldom encountered and there are no pistons currently made for that engine. If you need pistons for one of these rare 383 engines we can provide them as a custom set for you.
All of the pistons listed on this page are designed for the B engine 383 which used the 4.250 bore size. We offer a wide range of 383 Mopar pistons in several different styles, types, brands and compression ratios. The Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth and Mopar 383 are all the same engine and the pistons listed here will work in any of these engines.
Their was a high performance version of the 383 which was called the 383 Magnum. These engines generally had a bit more compression, bigger camshaft, low drag viscous fan assembly, windage tray and a few other refinements to improve power output compared to the standard 383 engine.
The 383 is a dependable, reasonably small and light, efficient engine package, that can be built to do everything from power a restored muscle car to being an all out drag racing engine. Many people tend to overlook the 383 as a high performance engine, which is a shame as it offers many benefits, and the core engines are easy to come by and relatively inexpensive compared to the more popular 440. In general, the 383 also had thicker cylinder walls, and less core shift than the 400. So often times, an engine built using the 383 block can make more power than a similar 400, due to better block structure resulting in less deflection of the cylinder bores under high loads.
In building up a high performance, racing or 383 stroker engine one of the first items that should be decided on is the pistons. Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth 383 pistons are available in cast, hypereutectic and forged types. We have a large selection of bore sizes and compression ratios available, as well as pistons made to work with stroker cranks and longer than stock connecting rods.
As produced the 383 was not produced with a good high compression piston. The 383 was most often equipped with a flat top piston. The stock pistons did not have any valve reliefs in them so you must be very careful about adding a high lift cam to any engine using the stock type flat top pistons. In many cases, adding a high lift cam will cause the valves to hit the pistons, if the pistons are not replaced with models including valve reliefs.
Installing higher compression, higher quality 383 pistons is one of the best improvements you can make to your engine. Installing a longer than stock stroke crankshaft is another way to really increase torque and horsepower with the 383. We have several different stroker cranks available. The most popular combination is to use a 3.750 stroke crank. This is the same stroke as used in the 440. Another popular performance upgrade is to switch to a longer rod. In most cases, the 440 length rod of 6.760 inches is a much better choice than the stock, short rod used from the factory.
For reference the original standard, stock 383 specs were:
Icon Mopar 383 PistonsHigh performance Icon Chrysler 383 forged pistons are premium quality pistons that are available for a very reasonable price. We have both 383 flat top and 383 dome pistons. These forged piston sets available in a wide range of sizes including standard bore and many popular oversizes. If you are building a 383 Mopar engine and are looking for improved acceleration, efficiency and strength then these pistons are the perfect choice for many applications. These pistons can be used in high performance street cars, serious street and strip cars as well as dedicated racing engines. The large variety of piston sizes, styles and compression ratios enables you to get the best specifications pistons for your exact application. |

We offer better than original, stock replacement 383 pistons from Sealed Power. These pistons are great for stock rebuilds, muscle car restorations, and even light duty performance applications. These pistons are a cast piston, which is the type originally used in these engines from the factory. The Sealed Power Piston sets we have are based on the original designs, but with improvements due to modern manufacturing techniques ensuring a better piston, at a great price. The piston sets are weight matched before packaging by Sealed Power. The pistons come with a selectively fit piston pin. We also offer the matching sealed power piston rings for all of these piston sets.

Eagle 4340 Steel H beam rods are manufactured from a TWO-PIECE FORGING. The forging process forces the grain into the shape of a connecting rod, resulting in a superior fatigue life. The rod cap is forged separately so that the grain runs perpendicular to the load forces, which strengthens the rod.
